Kanyakumari, South India - Mannakudi Bridge destroyed by 2004 Tsunami

The Mannakudi Bridge in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu near the southern cape in India, was destroyed by the Tsunami of 26th December 2004. Photo shows the two segments connected to land, but several metres from where they were supposed to be, that are still visible. In the foreground, on the broken segment, are three ‘Catumarams’: the Tamil word for the local fishing boat. It is from this word, imported into English by the British, the whole word gets the word Catamaran. In the far background is a section of the new Mannakudi Bridge. Photo shot in the afternoon sunlight; no people. Copy space. © Mano Chandra Dhas
