Vatican City, Vatican City State – A member of the Corps of the Pontifical Swiss Guard, or Swiss Guard as commonly known, stands guard at in the Vatican City near St. Peter’s Basilica. The Swiss Guard is a small force maintained by the Holy See. It is responsible for the safety of the Pope and the security of the Apostolic Palace including the entrances to the City State.
